From JUCO to the Elite Eight to pro basketball overseas.

The journey behind SOAR — and why I'm building it for young athletes and the families navigating the game beside them.

Joey Potts - Founder, SOAR Basketball Training

Basketball has taken me from junior college to NCAA Division I, the NAIA, professional basketball overseas, and the professional level here in the U.S. But my journey has been anything but straightforward.

During my freshman year of college, I broke my shooting wrist. Rather than letting it end my season, and potentially my career, I taught myself to play left-handed and returned the following year. That journey eventually led me to Oregon State, where I earned a walk-on opportunity and was part of the Beavers’ 2021 Pac-12 Championship and Elite Eight run. From there, I transferred to Oregon Tech before continuing my career professionally overseas.

Years later, another major injury to my right wrist forced me to adapt all over again. After surgery and months of recovery, I returned to professional basketball and played an entire season left-handed.

Those experiences are a huge part of why I created SOAR Basketball Training.

I've learned that player development is about much more than drills. It's about understanding the game, building confidence, taking ownership of your development, and learning how to adapt when things don't go according to plan.

Through SOAR, my goal is to pass along everything I've learned at every level of the game and help athletes become better, more complete basketball players—while developing the confidence and resilience they'll need throughout their own journey.

The Journey

Four levels. One standard.

01

College of Marin

JUCO

Where I built my foundation, earned my opportunity, and learned what it takes to compete at the next level.

02

Oregon State

NCAA Division I

An opportunity to compete at the highest level of college basketball and experience a Pac-12 Championship and Elite Eight run.

03

Oregon Tech

NAIA

A chance to take on a bigger role, grow as a player and leader, and compete in the national tournament.

04

Romania & Norway

Professional Overseas

An experience that challenged me to grow on and off the court while learning the game from an entirely new perspective.

The Mission

Why I train youth.

My mission at SOAR is to develop skilled, confident, and resilient basketball players through purposeful, game-driven training.

I believe development goes beyond learning drills. It's about understanding the game, competing with intention, and building skills that translate when it matters most.

Through an emphasis on Skill, Ownership, Adaptability, and Resilience, I want to challenge athletes to take responsibility for their growth, embrace adversity, and develop the confidence to compete at the next level.

My goal is to help every athlete become a more complete basketball player while building habits and qualities that extend beyond the court.

"Every level taught me something. I want the next generation to learn it with perspective — not in the dark."

The Mark

Vision. Elevation. Progress.

The hawk sees the whole field before it moves. It climbs, it adjusts, it stays patient. That's the standard SOAR asks of its athletes: see the path clearly, then rise into it.
